Ensembles

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is the center of the band program at Hibriten. This ensemble has long been recognized for high quality performance of serious concert band literature. In 40 years of State and District Festival participation, the Symphonic Band has earned 34 Superior ratings.

The Symphonic Band has also been honored on three occasions with the privilege of performing for the North Carolina Bandmasters Association. The first of these performances was in 1985 with Ms. Camilla Graeber conducting. The second performance took place in 1991 under the baton of Mr. Dennis Carswell. The most recent performance for the NC Bandmasters was in 2000 under the direction of Mr. Bill Witcher.

Rehearsals take place daily during the school day. The first 30 minutes of each rehearsal period is generally devoted to sectionals and individual practice, followed by one hour of full band rehearsal. The Symphonic Band presents at least five significant performances each year, the most important of which is at Northwest District Concert Band Festival in March. Some evening rehearsals will take place in the two to three weeks before Festival.

Panther Regiment

“The Panther Regiment is a volunteer ensemble that performs at home varsity football games, in-county away games, and at least one parade each year. This ensemble rehearses during a week-long band camp prior to the start of school and on Tuesday evenings throughout late-August and September.”

Pep Band

The Pep Band performs in the stands at two to three out-of-county varsity football games each year. Participation in Pep Band is voluntary and limited to 30 players per game due to limited bus space. Should more than 30 band members wish to participate in a given game, personnel selection will be made by Mr. Townsend based on instrumentation needs and seniority. Pep Band participation is expected of all section leaders and officers.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is open to band students who play saxophone (alto, tenor, or bari), trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, string/electric bass, or percussion (drum set or auxiliary). Rehearsals take place before and after school, and during class once a week, beginning in October. The Jazz Band will present at least two significant performances each year. Students must be enrolled in a band class in order to be a part of Jazz Band.
